My tanjore painting is here!!

Hi All,

You probably read a post before about my tanjore paintings. If not, here's the link to it - http://www.mriganayani.com/2009/03/thanjavur-painting-collage.html

Latest Update to that post - they are here at my place now!

They came in almost good condition - the framing got a little loose - I had to hammer in a couple of nails to fix that - not a problem. But the picture looks great!

When we were in India recently, we went to Guruvayoor temple and my sis and I got a statue of Krishna each. I got a white Krishna and she got a blue-grey Krishna. My mom shipped those along too with this shipment. I was so happy to see them!

Here are some pics. Our next project is to now set this up in my pantry/puja room! I need the skillful expertise of my husband ..haha..and that means I have no idea when we will be done!

  1. I landed on your page while I was searching for Tanjore Paintings. Your piece is really beautiful. I am in a similar situation. We just bought a new house and I am looking for a Ganesha painting for the entry wall. Can you share the artist information and the cost details.

    Thanks!

  2. Hi Sri,

    Thanks for stopping by.

Firstly, congrats on your new home. I'm sure its exciting setting up the place. I'm going through the same phase now!

I ordered this in Salem, India as that's my hometown. This was done by a person who takes Tanjore Painting classes in Salem. We got to know about him through a common friend. My sister and I both ordered paintings through him.

Let me know if you are close to Salem in India. I can send you his details then.

The cost for my big painting at the time I ordered was around Rs. 25000. But even by the time he finished the painting, the cost of the gold foil used had gone up. So, now it would cost around 30000 - 35000. It all depends on what kind of pictures you want done. The cost varies on the number of faces used in the painting as that is the toughest part.

If you are from around Chennai, you can buy some of these individual pictures from Mylapore - there are a lot of stores that sell them. They will cost you about 3000-4000 per picture.

    Good Luck!

  4. Thank you the detailed response. Yes, I am a native of Chennai but I live in the US. Do you have names of specific shops in Mylapore to share? I have never bought a Tanjore painting before. So want to make sure it is an authentic shop.

  5. Hey Sri,

I'm not sure of the shops in Chennai. But I have seen a couple of shops right opposite Shrutilaya music store in Mylapore. But I have no idea how authentic they are.

Sundari Silks also does have some really good pictures but they are a little on the expensive side.

I spent about 7 yrs of my life in Chennai too - studied at Ethiraj college!! Love Chennai inspite of it being like an oven!

    Take Care!

  26. Hi,

If you need good teacher for studying Tanjore Painting/Tanjore Arts in Salem, Tamil Nadu, I would give you a best contact. She has 11 years of experience and her paintings are really the work of a genius. She has lots of patience also. I learnt there and here is her contact number - 9442864136. But it is only for children and ladies.

  27. Hi anu,
The paintings are wonderful and so is the pooja cabinet. How did your mom ship it to you. I am trying to ship some paintings from India but shipping cost seem exorbitant. Especially large size tanjore paintings as the frames are quite heavy. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi - these were shipped using DHL couriers. Yes, shipping does become expensive. But there are options - the faster you need it, the more expensive it is. There is a ship by sea option too which usually works the cheapest but it would take more than 2 months to arrive. If you are in no hurry, consider that. You just have to have someone in India ask around different courier places for quotes.
